Safety Issues of Energy Storage Systems

  • Lithium-ion battery safety has attracted attentions worldwide due to current trends in communication and mobilization brought about by rapidly evolving versions of smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other electronic devices, as well as the continuing increase in the number of electric vehicles. Mechanical abuse condition is one of the most critical scenarios with possible catastrophic results, such as fire or explosion of lithium-ion batteries.
  • In our laboratory, by targeting at safety miles, from internal short circuit, thermal runaway to fire/explosion, we use theoretical modeling, in-situ/ex-situ characterization, as well as development numerical computation/simulation to unravel the safety mechanism of lithium-ion batteries from active particle level, component level, cell level to battery module/pack level.

Dynamic Behaviors of Advanced Structures & Materials

  • Various systems in our planet need stringent requirement for protection and load-bearing capability, from small cellphone, battery, to large vehicles. On the other hand, highly industrialized production asks for low-cost, fast manufacturing, and recyclable process, posing a grant challenge for us.
  • Follow simple and fundamental mechanics design philosophy and principles, we design bio-inspired lattice materials and and novel micro-structured materials, and experimentally, theoretically and numerically understand their structure-performance relations in dynamic loading.
